Man lucky not to lose all, after waiting to seek medical help for erection lasting 8 days

A Peruvian hospital admits a rather unusual case and performs emergency surgery. The patient went to the emergency room complaining of sever pain due to having an erection that he had for 8 days.

The doctors first thought the man had taken to many stimulants such as Viagra or perhaps was under the influence of alcohol, but tests revealed this was not the issue.

Doctors’ at the Hospital in Sullana Peru, had to perform surgery to correct the problem and relieve the poor man of pain.

“The patient came in with severe pain due to prolonged erections that he had for about 8 days straight. We quickly established at the time the, 53 – year-old, man had taken no stimulants or alcohol.” – told the surgeon Nelson Carrasco.

According to the doctor, the patient, whose name was not released, suffered from Veno-occlusive Priapism, a prolonged, painful penile erection, unrelated to sexual stimulation or desire, which occurs when blood in the penis is trapped or unable to drain, which in this case, was caused by a blood clot in the cavernous tissue.

Doctors located the blocked veins by Angiography which uses a special dye injected into the bloodstream to enable the physician to see blockages on x-ray. Once the blockage was located, a passageway (shunt) had to be surgically inserted to divert blood flow and reestablish circulation.

The doctor said that the operation was successful, and he was very glad that they managed to find the cause of priapism. The Doctor also warned others not to wait so long before seeking medical help for prolonged erection. A painful erection lasting for more than 4 hours indicates priapism. When treatment is delayed, penile scarring and permanent inability to achieve an erection (impotence) can result.

This man was very lucky as it looks as though he will make a full recovery and once again be able to rise to the occasion when needed.
